1.Centering is Key: Before you even think about trimming, make sure your piece is perfectly centered on the wheel. An off-center pot will wobble, making it difficult to achieve even trimming. Spend extra time on this step to avoid frustration later.

2.Use the Right Tool: The Mudtools Do All Trimming Tool isn’t just a trimming tool; it’s a multi-functional powerhouse that can handle everything from rough shaping to fine detailing. Its ergonomic design fits comfortably in your hand, allowing for precise control and a better feel for the clay. This tool will help you refine your pieces with ease, making the transition from beginner to master smoother and faster.

3.Perfect Your Pressure: The amount of pressure you apply while trimming can make or break your piece. Too much pressure can cause the tool to dig in too deeply, leaving unsightly gouges, while too little will result in uneven surfaces. Practice applying gentle, consistent pressure, gradually increasing as you get a feel for the clay’s response. The goal is to remove just the right amount of material to reveal a smooth, even surface.

4.Check Your Angle: The angle at which you hold your trimming tool is crucial. Holding it too steeply can cause you to cut too deeply, while too shallow of an angle might not cut enough. Aim to match the tool’s angle to the curve of your pot, allowing it to glide along the surface. This will help you achieve even walls and a professional finish, bringing out the best in your work.

5.Slow Down: Trimming is a process that rewards patience. Resist the urge to rush through it. Slowing down gives you better control over the tool and allows you to make more precise adjustments. This mindful approach not only reduces the risk of mistakes but also lets you enjoy the process, turning each trimming session into a satisfying, meditative experience.

Posted @withregram • @juliettedavin Carving the first of 3 large bowls that I threw the other day. This one is the smallest and is 13 inches across (it will shrink when fired). I decided to carve all 3 differently but I won’t know what pattern I will use until I’m sitting in front of each one.

I threw each of these bowls in the @bklynclay studio from 1.5 pounds of @standardclaycompany troy porcelain and carved them with a @mudtools drag tool. Once bisque-fired and before glazing, I smoothed and refined all the edges and surfaces using @diamondcoretools sanding pads/paper. I sodafired them @theokidokistudio in a workshop led by @htceramics_ 🔥
